PRINCIPAL’S PEN

Dear Families,

Mother’s Day

What a privilege it was to host some of our school mothers and grandmothers at our Mother’s Day afternoon last Friday. My own mother has been visiting Babinda over the last two weeks which has reminded me of the importance of the vocation of motherhood which can sometimes be under appreciated in our contemporary world.

It was interesting to note, that as I interviewed each student about their mother last week, I could see their eyes light up whenever they spoke about the nurturing and loving presence of their mums in their lives. A quote I heard recently from actor Denzel Washington was “A mother is a son’s first true love. A son is a mother’s, last true love”. That was certainly apparent when I spoke to many of our boys who obviously held a special place in their hearts for their mums, even if they’re not always willing to admit it. For our girls, you are such an important role model to them, showing them strength of character and forming their personalities, attitudes, and beliefs.

A big thanks to those who were able to attend and those who supported our Mother’s Day raffle. I hope you all had a great day on Sunday and were reminded just how lucky you are to have your truly magnificent children.

Circle of Security Parenting

A reminder that each Monday for the next 5 weeks we have Alana Dimarco from Circle of Security Parenting offering sessions for our parents between 9:00 am and 10:30 am. The first session on Anxiety in Children was very well received and I hope more of you can take advantage of these excellent sessions.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

It has been such a shame that throughout the pandemic, many communication channels between school and home have been diminished. Fortunately, restrictions have now eased which means we can now re-gather and meet face to face. Parent/Teacher Interviews provide a great opportunity for teachers and parents to share knowledge and understandings about each child, to further improve their academic and social progress. Our teachers have many great things they would love to share with you. If this week doesn’t work, we understand and are more than willing to reschedule.

Assembly

Please join us for our first assembly of the term this Friday the 13th of May at 2pm. This will encompass a class prayer, birthday celebrations and awards. All are welcome.

Excursions

Please keep an eye on your emails as we have many exciting excursions coming up. Next week our Year 3-6 students are off to Innisfail for the Peninsula Sports Roadshow and our P-2 students are heading over to Babinda State School for their Under 8’s day. The following week, our whole school is heading to South Johnstone to celebrate the Feast Day of St Rita.

Sports

A special congratulations to Jax, Latoya, and Timothy who qualified for the Cassowary Coast Cross Country meet last week. All three of them ran exceptionally well and did our school proud.

A big mention must also go to Latoya and Katara who have both made the Peninsula AFL team which is competing on the Sunshine Coast in a few weeks. We wish them all the best in their preparations and can’t wait to hear how they go.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear families,

This week the Year three and Year five students will be sitting the NAPLAN Assessment (National literacy and Numeracy Assessment). As students progress through their school years, it’s important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national standards over time.

It is important to remember that NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It doesn’t replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ progress.

This week will consist of students sitting writing, reading, convention of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The following questions assess content linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. Online NAPLAN tests provide more precise results and are more engaging for students. One of the main benefits is tailored testing, where the test presents questions which may be more or less difficult depending on a students responses.

Kind regards,

Sam Benvenuti
Deputy Principal – Leader of Learning and Teaching

Dear Families,

Thank you to all the families who donated gifts and purchased tickets for our Mother’s Day raffle.

Instead of one main prize, we decided to make 7 smaller gifts and that way more mum’s received some lovely gifts. A total of $270 was raised, a really great effort.

Thank you for supporting the schools P & F fundraising efforts.

Kind regards,

Maryjane Masina
