VISION STATEMENT
St Rita’s school is a dynamic learning community strengthened by our Mercy heritage and inspired through the teachings of Jesus Christ. We are connected and compassionate to the needs of our community and are proud of our local Wanyurr-Majay culture. We engage our learners through relevant and hands-on experiences, bringing joy and confidence to learning.
PRINCIPAL’S PEN
Dear Families,
What an absolute pleasure it was today to speak to our years 3-6 students about their visions and dreams for their Babinda community. They were able to articulate their research and I was most impressed by the different modes they all chose to find their information. Some emailed, some made phone calls, and some arranged face-to-face interviews to find out the answers to their questions. This is the type of learner we want to encourage at St Rita’s, critical thinkers who are; brave, confident, inquisitive, open-minded and passionate to make a difference. Well done all, and thanks to Brett Moller and the families who came to see the children’s learning.

Anzac Day
A special thanks to those who came to the Anzac Day service on Monday morning. Latoya carried the Australian flag with great pride and purpose and Evie and Katara both placed the wreath with great care and respect for the occasion.
Thanks to the Babinda RSL who allowed us to cater for the event and the parents and staff who made sandwiches, cakes and slices and served the members of the community at the service.
Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is coming up and we will be holding a special celebration for our mums or special other’s. On Friday the 6th of May you are invited to St Rita’s for our Mother’s Day afternoon activities. At 1.25 pm, mums are invited to eat lunch with their children before we go inside for a special Mother’s Day Liturgy. After the liturgy we will be offering a number of fun activities for mums to complete with their children. A formal invite will be going home in the coming days.
Cassowary Coast Cross-Country

We wish Jax, Latoya and Timothy the very best as they represent St Rita’s at the upcoming Cassowary Coast Cross-Country on Friday the 6th of May. These three students qualified for this event due to their outstanding finishes at the Small Schools cross-country last term.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Please note that parent/teacher interview are being held during week 4 this term. Classroom teachers will be in touch with families with their availability during that week. If week 4 doesn’t work for your family, our teachers are more than happy to negotiate another time. Parent/ teacher interviews present a great opportunity for parents and teachers to meet and discuss learning outcomes, and opportunities for each child. The home-school partnership is very important, and we are aiming for 100% parent attendance at this term’s interviews. Your support in this is much appreciated.
Good News Story
Once a week one of our prep parents, Samantha Newbury has been buying a basket of fresh fruit and donating it to the school to share with our students. Sam was never asked to do this by anyone, just simply decided to do it as a good gesture, asking for nothing in return. Our children have certainly been devouring the fruit each Thursday, on behalf of us all I’d like to formally thank Sam for this, and for being a shining light of kindness in our school community.

COUNSELLOR CORNER
It starts with Self Worth and Respect
After a welcome break, we return to the routine of school. Students at St Rita have begun lessons in Friendology. Initial topics are looking at students identifying their self-worth and unique character strengths. Of all the billions of people in the world, there is no body exactly like you. It is important to identify and value our individuality. Students may refer to this as their Inner Ninja. Self-respect is crucial for all of us to be productive in respectful relationships. Emotional insecurity and low self-confidence go hand in hand with mean-on-purpose behaviours. To support these learnings at home and help your children strengthen their self-worth and respect please visit Friendology from the link below to start (or continue) these important conversations.

“If you want to be good friends to others, we need to be good friends to ourselves”
Dana Kerford, Friendology Founder.
On another note, VPG Every Family Program and Innisfail Community Support Centre are holding fantastic and quality parent education sessions throughout May and June. For further information you are welcome to contact them or follow their social media page for more information. (Please see flyer below)
Warm regards,
Miss Jo
